HTML5 and the Problem with “Apps”

This is what is wrong with “apps”. It’s taking us back to the days of VHS vs Beta. If you don’t have the right device or expensive software, you can’t use the technology.

Sorry to use this particular company as an example in the screenshot, because it may not be their fault, but it’s just one example that I encountered recently.

A startup like this might already be planning an Android version, but even then, many people will not be able to use the software without buying special hardware.

In the near future, there are going to be many mobile platforms, and the problem is going to get worse. Are companies really supposed to write separate code for all devices? If apps are not abandoned, companies and computer users will be facing a large number of incompatible systems:

  • Android
  • iOS
  • Windows 8
  • Firefox OS
  • Ubuntu for Mobile
  • Blackberry
  • Jolla
  • Tizen
  • and more…?

Who wants to write eight versions of the same program? It’s a serious problem. I think that HTML5 is the only way to go.
